How to Change Your Gmail Address Without Losing Emails
You Can Now Change Your Gmail Address: Step-by-Step Guide
Gmail users the ability to change their email addresses—a highly requested feature that keeps all existing emails, files, and data intact. The update, being rolled out gradually, allows users to modify their address up to three times, with certain limits in place to maintain account stability.

What’s New for Gmail Users?
For years, Gmail addresses were permanent, leaving users stuck with outdated or embarrassing usernames. That changes now. With this update, you can switch to a completely new @gmail.com address without losing any of your existing emails, files, or photos. Emails sent to your old address will still reach you because it automatically becomes an alias.
The new option was confirmed in an updated Google support document, with Google noting that the feature is “gradually rolling out” to all users.
Who Can Change Their Gmail Address?
This feature is available to all personal Google Account holders with an @gmail.com address. While the rollout is gradual, so not everyone will see the option immediately, it will appear in your account settings over time.

After updating, you can sign in with either your old or new address, and emails sent to the previous address will continue to reach you.
Limitations to Keep in Mind
While this is an exciting change, Google has added a few safeguards:
- Each account can change its Gmail address up to three times (giving a total of four addresses).
- Once changed, the new address cannot be altered or deleted for 12 months.
- You cannot create a new Google Account with an @gmail.com address for 12 months after the change.
- Your old address remains permanently tied to your account and cannot be claimed by anyone else.
- Some older services, such as past Calendar events, may continue to show your previous email until updated.
This update gives Gmail users much-needed flexibility to refresh their email identity without losing any data—a long-awaited change that is finally becoming a reality.
